The Champions League could be set for a considerable restructuring, which would see the group phase of the competition cut down to just 16 teams.
It
is believed that clubs outside the Premier League have become concerned
with the ever increasing revenue in the English game and such proposals
would effectively increase the number of glamour ties on show, even in
the early stages.
According
to a report in The Guardian, the potential plan is to divide the group
stage of the tournament into two separate eight-team sections.
However,
given the current contractual situation with the competition, no
changes would be announced until next season and would likely not be
implemented until after the 2017/18 campaign.
The
competition's top 16 seeds could also enter under this potential format
at the last 32 phase but would not be able to draw each other at that
time.
This news comes hot on the heels of Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge calling for big clubs to be protected in the competition, after last season's finalists Juventus were eliminated before the quarter-final stage. [yahoo sports]
