NIGERIAN SENATE STOPS CUSTOMS PLAN ON VEHICLE DUTY ULTIMATUM

The Senate, Tuesday, passed a resolution stopping the Nigerian Customs Service from implementing its planned vehicle duty ultimatum. The directive orders the Nigerian Customs Service to stop its plan to penalise Nigerians who do not pay duties on their vehicles within one month.

The Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah, who raised the motion during plenary said the new Customs policy was “a serious matter”. Senate President, Bukola Saraki who said it was the responsibility of the senate to ensure the welfare of Nigerians resolved with other Senators that Customs halt the planned penalty until the agency appears before the Senate Committee on Customs to clarify issues.

Senator representing Kogi state, senator, Dino Melaye, in his contribution said that vehicles cannot even be cleared in the first place without the collaboration of the Customs officials and as such, penalising Nigerians who do not pay the vehicle duties was not acceptable. Recall that the Nigerian Customs had warned that it would impound vehicles without duty papers and prosecute their owners.
