Sierra Marquina of Us Weekly cited a source Monday who said Odom did not relapse but sought out treatment to "start fresh for the New Year."
The source said he "did it for his kids."
Marquina noted Odom was hospitalized and
eventually placed into an induced coma for more than two weeks after he
was found unconscious at a legal brothel in 2015.
Timing is apparently a part of Odom's decision to check himself into rehab.
According to Aili Nahas and Aurelie Corinthios of People,
Odom's protracted divorce from estranged wife Khloe Kardashian will be
finalized Saturday. Nahas and Corinthios cited a source who said the
divorce and holidays motivated Odom's decision because he didn't want to
relapse.
The source said Odom will remain in rehab for 30 days as a precautionary measure.
Odom last appeared in an NBA game in the 2012-13
season as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers drafted
him with the No. 4 overall pick in 1999, and he played 14 seasons in the
league for the Clippers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas
Mavericks.
He amassed an impressive resume that included a
bronze medal as a member of the 2004 United States Olympic team and the
2010-11 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. He also won championships as
part of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 Lakers as a double-double threat and
secondary option alongside Kobe Bryant.
Odom averaged 13.3 points and 8.4 rebounds a night in his career.
