Body hair can be appealing—or appalling. Learn how to tame yours to look your best
A yeti can pull off the head-to-toe hairy look. Lumberjacks too.
But the rest of us need to maintain our fur with a thorough grooming routine. Unkempt hair can make you feel dirty, and it also makes men look older.
Shaving cream and razor blades aren’t always the answer—hair texture varies depending on where it appears, and some areas are more sensitive than others. Read on for our handy tips on keeping every hair in (or out of) its place.
Eyebrows
A unibrow will not win friends or influence dates. To take care of your brows, use tweezers to grab each hair as close to the root as you can; then yank assertively.Clean up stray hairs around the edges to sharpen the brow’s overall shape.
Butt
If you’re getting your back done, ask for a butt job too. It won’t cost you much more and saves you from trying to trim it yourself.Everything has to go. Having little or no hair back there keeps you cleaner and also helps minimize sweat.
Chest
Don’t go overboard—most women say a hairy chest looks more masculine. You want to keep it a little longer than a half inch. It’ll look natural but tidy. If you like the bare look, go with a wax or prepare to shave every three days. Chest stubble looks and feels ridiculous.
Armpits
Armpit hair can be a friendly forest for odor-causing bacteria, so keep it as short as possible.Trim it every couple of weeks with scissors or a trimmer. If you want it gone, use a razor in the shower, just like your wife does.
Back
Waxing keeps you hairless for as long as six weeks, versus six days for shaving. See a professional, who will trim the hair with scissors before applying wax and using strips to rip it out from its roots, says Lauren Rachel, a grooming expert at Boardroom Salon for Men.If you decide to go DIY, you’ll need a partner and the right razor.
Nose & Ear Hair
Keep those gross growths out of sight with an ear and nose trimmer, or nose-hair scissors. Move with caution so you don’t give yourself a bloody nose. You can also have these areas waxed. Never pluck nose hair—that can clear a path for bacteria and allergens.
Pubic Hair
Bushy is bad; bare isn’t manly. Use scissors to trim hair to about a quarter inch, says Ben Brown of Bliss spas. Then run a clipper with a short guard up and down your inner thighs—and lightly over your scrotum—to tidy things up. Hold the skin taut to prevent any grabbing, catching, or nicking. -Men's health
