A young man who had just been released from prison after serving term for theft, was lynched to death
by an angry mob after he and his gang had gone to rob residents of the
Inyang Edem area in Calabar, Cross River State, Calabar Alive reports.
The victim, identified as Chidozie,
was said to be a Senior Secondary School dropout and a member of a
notorious cult group that has been terrorising Calabar and its environs,
was said to have gone with his gang members numbering five, to steal
mobile phones when luck ran out on him and he was caught in the process.
The
gang, according to the report, had allegedly attacked a female teacher
in the area where they dispossessed her of her phones and other
valuables but when they were making their escape, Chidozie was the one
nabbed and the crowd reportedly beat him to death before setting him ablaze.
An
eyewitness narrated that the gang did not know that people in the
neighbourhood had been keeping watch as cultists have been giving them
sleepless nights in the recent past.
“Chidozie
was unfortunate because while the others escaped, he was caught. Due to
the spate of armed robberies and cultists attack in our area, the angry
mob did not spare him because he refused to accept that the phone was
with him. They beat him to death and then set him ablaze.
He
was just released from prison last week, and before then, he was
expelled from Atu Secondary School when he was in Senior Secondary 2
(SS2), due to the nefarious activities he was involved in," the source said.
Another
resident of the area, said the people in the area were happy that
Chidozie was killed on the spot because he and his gang members had
terrorised the area for long:
“That boy and his gang have been disturbing this area for a long time; they snatch bags and rob shops in the evenings.
He was so unfortunate to have taken this route after they robbed somewhere else. We are glad that they got him today.”
