The students of college of Medicine, University of Lagos on Idi-Araba
campus have cried out over the invasion of their hostels by bedbugs.
Only last year, students at the Akoka main campus protested invasion of
their hostels by this same pests.
The College of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences Students
Association (COMPSSA) said they have tried in their own capacity to
put an end to the bedbug saga by making arrangement for fumigation at
least twice every semester without success.
The students for fear of carrying bedbugs into the wards during ward
rounds have to meticulously check their bags and clothes to make sure
there is no bedbug attached.
As a result of the desperate need to put an end to the bedbug menace,
most students spray all kinds of chemicals on
their mattresses, belongings and even their rooms. Most of these
chemicals may even be harmful to the students health.
The students are calling on the school authority to declare a state
if emergency in the hostels and tackle the bedbug menace once and for
all even if it means closing the entire hostel for a week, for effective
fumigation.
